access to the island
To get to the island, you either need a boat, or a pickup. Swimming over is strongly recommended against for the following reasons:
- You’ll get wet
- Your food and other supplies will get wet
- You might lose your beer as the box falls apart
- There is enough current to fight that it could be interesting
- It’s farther than it looks
- There is lots of high-speed boat traffic that suddenly appears
If you bring a boat, you can launch it at the Shangri La Marina for ten dollars. Unless you are Hydro-One: which will be $15. They might charge you to park your car (and trailer) if they think of it. You should be able to negotiate your way out of this. If all else fails, offer to park back in the field for no charge.
To get picked-up call Chris’ cell at 613-797-8361. We are not using the smoke signals anymore as it got too confusing because most people could not modulate them well enough.
There are two pickup locations:
- Shangri-La Marina (you might have to pay to park so this is the less preferred location)
- Our mainland dock on the west side of the lake
food
If you are coming up for the day just bring snacks and drinks for yourself. We have a kitchen that is pretty much like one you would find at home. If your drinking water needs are extreme bring some of that too. We generally have tons of bottled Kanata water in stock.
If you are staying over / for dinner, you will be responsible for some aspect of a meal, or for multi-day periods, you might be on the hook for a meal for the group. So make sure you inquire about numbers and food sensitivities. Chris likes big thick steaks for example and is allergic to most else.
accommodation
If you are staying in the guest room, there is a double bed and two singles. Bring sheets for the beds that you are using. If there are questions about assignment etc. please ask.
We do not have laundry facilities, so bring enough towels and linens for your stay. Remember to bring a couple of dish-towels if you are coming for more than a day!
camping options
There are a couple of camping options available.
- Shangri La has a campground. We have not used it yet and need someone to test it and report back. This could be an ideal solution for someone that wants some distance from the island insanity that can sometimes occur.
- There is a cool spot just up the hill from the cottage where we think that it would be nice to camp. Again, nobody has tried it yet and we need someone to report on it.
dangers
The cottage and surrounding area is not very child friendly. For example, there are locations where the drop into the water is quite sheer and it could be difficult to get back out if you fell in. Getting lost on the island would not likely be life threatening but a small child might not have the skills to find their way for quite a while.
Also, watch out for rock faces that suddenly drop off – especially directly behind the cottage. Not to make it sound too dangerous, but if you don’t watch where you are walking .. !
rules
Sorry to have so many rules. But without rules we would be .. dogs?
- all motors at the cottage are two stroke – please don’t use plain gas with any of them
- don’t hurt yourself – it’s a long way to the nearest hospital
